FAQs

Why do I need to register to be able to use thedesk?

thedesk is an interactive website. You need to register for thedesk to enable it to:

  • create summary worksheets of the content you enter in the interactive modules and tools that you can refer back to later
  • provide graphs to show you how your scores on the quizzes change over time
  • allow you to personalise the website by adding your own photos

Registering also gives you access to specific information at your institution such as 'Get Help' information, The Coffee House, and links back to your insitution from thedesk.

Is my information secure?

Yes. Anything you enter in the program is kept confidential and stored on a secure server hosted by The University of Queensland.

Only you have access to the content you enter into the modules and tools, as well as photos you add to "My Profile".

How fast does my internet have to be?
Some users in rural areas may find it takes a short time to load pages.  Most videos and audios are short to keep their loading time as fast possible.  If there are problems downloading video or audio files, transcripts can be used instead.
Do I have to do every module?

You can do a little or as much of the program as you want and at a time that suits you.  You choose which sections might be most useful to you and when.  If you aren't sure where to begin, do a quiz.  You will get individual feedback and some recommendations about modules that might help you.

How long does it take?
The modules can take around 10 to 15 minutes to complete.
Can I stop in the middle of a module and come back later?
Yes, you'll come back to the step you were last on.
I am having trouble playing the videos. What can I do?
  • Be patient, on a slow or congested connection playing a video may be slow or start and stop intermittently. Pausing a video at the start and giving it time to load before a playing may help solve the problem.
  • Ensure you are using the latest version of your web browser and the latest version of Adobe Flash (get.adobe.com/flashplayer/).
  • Try closing any open applications (other than your web browser).
  • Try restarting your computer.
If you have tried these and nothing seems to help, then drop us a line. We really appreciate you taking the time to help us solve the problem.
How does my institution register to have thedesk tailored for our students?
Institutions interested in registering for thedesk can email us at thedesk@uq.edu.au and we will send you a registration form and dissemination resources.
What theories are the strategies based on?
thedesk uses cognitive-behavioural, mindfulness, and positive psychology theories, which have been demonstrated to be effective in improving wellbeing.
